MANICUREFingernails
and the surrounding cuticles need regular, careful treatment. A weekly manicure is
adequate to maintain the shape of the nails, although cuticle cream should be massaged in
daily to encourage growth from the base of the nail, and is especially important if the
nails are brittle or dry. Always protect nails and hands with rubber gloves when washing
or using harsh chemical.
Cuticles - never push or prod the cuticle with sharp, metal instruments, never
cut them.
Nails - do not attempt to grow long nails if they do not grow well naturally.
Keep them all one length, and use an emery board to keep them in trim.
File in one direction, as sawing back and forth dries out the moisture in the
nail. Keep the sides straight; filling too low into the corners weakens the nail. If your
nails are weak or easily chipped, brush on nail hardeners which will strengthen them by
wrapping the nail with a criss-cross fibrous coat. If you nails do grow long easily, keep
them short and well trimmed. Soften dry nails by soaking them in warm olive oil for 20-30
minutes once a week.
Artificial nail kits are an alternative for nails in bad condition, but they can
look unnatural if badly applied. The nail rebuilding treatment available at many beauty
salons are sophisticated and more effective.
