Eyelashes protect the eyes from dust particles and act as a frame for the eyes. Their natural colour and length generally benefit from emphasis of the following kinds:

• Mascara should be applied in light coats, to darken the lashes. Ensure lashes are unclogged after using mascara: comb them with a fine eyelash comb.
• Dyeing the lashes negates the need for mascara and can be very successful. This must be done professionally by a beautician. A lash tint generally lasts 4-6 weeks, as eyelashes renew themselves about every 6 weeks. This is especially good for the pale blondes’ or redheads’ lashes but dye brown, not black.
• Artificial lashes can look natural if carefully applied, but glues can cause irritation.
• Eyelash curlers lift short or thin lashes to give an illustion of length and thickness as well as opening up the eyes.
• A nightly application of castor oil or vaseline gently dabbed on to the lashes can help to strengthen and condition them.
